The 2009 crop year was difficult at planting time for corn, soybeans and spring/winter wheat due to unusually high amounts of rainfall and associated flooding. Prevented planting claims were made on just over 6 million acres across corn, soybeans, spring wheat and winter wheat during the 2009 calendar year.
Shades of blue on this map indicate acres which were reported as prevented in each of USDA’s crop reporting districts during 2009. Each black dot on the map represents 50 thousand acres of corn and/or soybean cultivation in 2009. Prevented planting claims have complex restrictions on possible future actions farmers are allowed to take, some claims prevent any further planting for the given season. Lanworth is currently using these claims data to perform targeted analysis of districts where there could be increases in total cultivated area in corn, soy and spring wheat for the 2010 crop year.
The co-incidence of high prevented planting claims and intensive corn and soybean cultivation last year indicates districts where spring planted area could experience increases to total cultivated area in corn and soybeans. Lanworth uses ground observations, satellite imagery and advanced spatial analytics to monitor districts and adjusts its spring planting estimates accordingly.
